A Good Examination of Conscience

The Ten Commandments are some of the most well-known teachings in the Bible. Given by God to Moses, they are not simply a list of rules—they are a guide to living a life rooted in love, faith, and holiness.

In today’s world, where right and wrong can sometimes feel confusing, the Ten Commandments continue to offer clarity and direction.

More Than Rules

It can be easy to see the commandments as restrictions, but they are actually gifts from God.

They teach us:

  • How to love God

  • How to treat others

  • How to live with integrity and peace

The commandments are meant to protect us and lead us toward a fuller relationship with God.

Why Study the Ten Commandments?

Studying the commandments helps us:

  • Examine our lives honestly

  • Grow in virtue

  • Better understand sin and grace

  • Strengthen our relationship with God

They are also an important part of preparing for Confession and growing spiritually.

The First Three Commandments: Loving God

The first commandments focus on our relationship with God:

  1. Put God first

  2. Honor His name

  3. Keep holy the Sabbath

These remind us that faith should be at the center of our lives—not something secondary or occasional.

The Remaining Commandments: Loving Others

The other commandments guide our relationships with people:

  • Honor your parents

  • Respect life

  • Be faithful

  • Be honest

  • Avoid jealousy and greed

They teach us that how we treat others matters deeply to God.

Studying Them Prayerfully

When reflecting on the commandments, don’t just ask:
“Did I break this?”

Also ask:

  • “How can I live this more fully?”

  • “Where is God inviting me to grow?”

This turns the commandments from a checklist into a path toward holiness.

A Good Examination of Conscience

The Ten Commandments are especially helpful before Confession.

Take time to prayerfully reflect:

  • Have I put God first?

  • Have my words reflected love and truth?

  • Have I treated others with charity and respect?

This honest reflection helps us grow closer to God.

Living Them Daily

The commandments are not meant only for church or prayer time—they are meant for everyday life:

  • In our homes

  • At work

  • In our conversations

  • In the choices we make each day

Faith is lived in the ordinary moments.

A Simple Prayer

Lord,
help me to follow Your commandments with love and sincerity.
Teach me to put You first,
to love others well,
and to live according to Your truth each day. Amen.

The Ten Commandments are not outdated—they are timeless.

And when we study and live them with faith, they become not a burden, but a path to freedom, peace, and deeper union with God.
