Couples Who Pray Together: Bringing Your Relationship Closer to God
A couple can talk every day, share meals, make plans, laugh together, and support one another through difficult seasons.
But there is something especially beautiful about a couple who can also turn toward God together and pray.
Whether you are dating, engaged, newly married, or have been married for decades, praying together invites Jesus into the center of your relationship.
You don't need long, elaborate prayers.
Sometimes it begins with simply taking each other's hand and saying:
“Let's pray.”
Pray For Each Other—and With Each Other
There is a difference between telling someone, “I'll pray for you,” and actually hearing the person you love pray for you.
Imagine hearing:
“Jesus, please protect her today. Give her peace, strengthen her faith, and help her with everything she is carrying.”
Or:
“Lord, please give him strength. Protect him in his work, guide his decisions, and help him become the man You are calling him to be.”
Those prayers can communicate something profound:
Your soul matters to me.
Ultimately, Christian love should help the other person reach Heaven.
Pray When Things Are Good
Don't wait until something is wrong.
Thank God together when life is going well.
“Thank You, Jesus, for today.”
“Thank You for bringing us together.”
“Thank You for providing for us.”
“Thank You for the prayers You have already answered.”
Gratitude keeps us from treating God's blessings as things we simply deserve.
Pray When Things Are Hard
Every relationship eventually encounters uncertainty, stress, disappointment, disagreement, illness, financial pressure, family difficulties, or seasons of waiting.
Those are precisely the moments when couples need prayer.
Before trying to solve everything yourselves, stop and pray:
“Jesus, we don't know what to do with this situation. Please guide us. Protect our relationship, give us wisdom, and help us treat each other with patience and charity. We place this in Your hands.”
The problem may not immediately disappear.
But now you aren't carrying it alone.
Pray Before Difficult Conversations
This can completely change the way we approach disagreements.
Before discussing something difficult, quietly ask:
“Holy Ghost, help us speak with charity and listen with humility.”
Ask God to help you seek what is true and good rather than simply trying to win.
Sometimes the person who needs to change is the other person.
Sometimes it is us.
Often, it is both.
Pray the Rosary Together
The Rosary is a beautiful prayer for couples and families.
Offer each decade for something specific:
Your relationship.
Your families.
Your future.
Your work.
Your children—or future children.
Your vocations.
Someone who has fallen away from the Faith.
The Church.
The intentions you are carrying privately.
And if an entire Rosary feels difficult at first, begin with one decade together.
Five minutes of sincere prayer is a wonderful place to start.
Go to Mass Together
One of the most beautiful things a Catholic couple can do is kneel beside one another at Holy Mass.
Bring your relationship to the altar.
During the Consecration, quietly offer Jesus the person beside you.
“Jesus, make us holy. Help us love each other according to Your will. Lead us both to Heaven.”
A relationship centered on Christ isn't a relationship without problems.
It is a relationship that knows where to bring those problems.
Don't Only Pray for What You Want From Them
It is easy for prayer to become:
“God, please make him change.”
Or:
“God, please make her understand.”
Try praying differently.
“Jesus, make me more patient.”
“Teach me to listen.”
“Show me where I need to change.”
“Help me love without keeping score.”
“Make me the spouse You are calling me to become.”
Prayer shouldn't only change our circumstances.
It should change us.
When You Can't Pray Together, Pray for Each Other
Schedules can be difficult. One person may be traveling, working late, exhausted, or simply in a different place spiritually.
Don't give up.
Send a simple message:
“I'm praying a decade for you today.”
Offer your Communion for them.
Say a Hail Mary while driving.
Ask their Guardian Angel to protect them.
Place their name before Jesus during Adoration.
Some of the most powerful love in a relationship happens quietly, when the other person doesn't even know you are praying.
A Five-Minute Couple Prayer
You don't need to create an overwhelming spiritual routine.
Before bed, spend five minutes together.
Thank God for one blessing from the day.
Tell Him one thing you need help with.
Pray for one person besides yourselves.
Say an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.
Then ask God to protect your relationship and lead you closer to Him.
That's it.
Do it again tomorrow.
Over time, those little prayers can become part of the foundation of your relationship.
Ask Yourself an Important Question
We spend enormous amounts of time preparing for careers, houses, weddings, finances, children, vacations, and the future.
But how much time do we spend preparing our souls?
If you love someone deeply, don't only ask:
“How can I make them happy?”
Ask:
“How can I help this person become holy?”
Pray for each other.
Forgive each other.
Encourage each other toward the Sacraments.
Go to Mass together.
Pray the Rosary.
Remind each other to trust God when life becomes difficult.
And when one person is struggling to pray, perhaps the other can carry the prayer for a little while.
Put Jesus in the Middle
A beautiful couple isn't one that never struggles.
It is one that continually learns to turn back toward Christ.
So tonight, take the hand of the person you love and pray:
Jesus, thank You for bringing us together. Help us love each other in a way that leads us closer to You. Protect our relationship from anything that would separate us from You or from one another. Give us patience in difficult seasons, gratitude in joyful seasons, and trust during seasons when we cannot see what You are doing. Teach us to pray for one another, forgive one another, and help one another become saints. May our love always lead us toward Heaven. Amen.
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, pray for our couples and families.
St. Joseph, protect our men and future husbands.
Our Lady, protect our women and future wives.
St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us.
The greatest thing you can desire for the person you love is not simply a happy life together—but that one day, you reach Heaven together.
