March: The Month of St. Joseph- Why the Church Honors Him — and Why We Should Pray to Him
The Church traditionally dedicates the month of March to St. Joseph, the foster father of Our Lord and the chaste spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
His feast day, March 19, stands at the heart of the month, but the Church gives him these weeks in a special way so that we may grow in devotion to this quiet and powerful saint.
But why St. Joseph? And why now?
The Silent Saint Who Shaped Salvation History
St. Joseph never speaks a single recorded word in Scripture.
Yet his silence was not weakness. It was strength.
He:
Protected the Child Jesus from Herod
Provided for the Holy Family
Led them into Egypt and back
Worked humbly and faithfully
Obeyed God immediately and without hesitation
He was entrusted with the two greatest treasures on earth:
Jesus and Mary.
If God the Father chose St. Joseph to guard His Son, we can trust him to guard our families as well.
Why the Church Gives March to St. Joseph
The Church assigns certain months to particular devotions to help us grow in love and focus.
March comes just before Holy Week. As we move toward the Passion of Christ, we look to the man who protected Christ in His hidden life.
St. Joseph teaches us:
Quiet fidelity
Obedience without drama
Courage without boasting
Leadership rooted in holiness
In a time when fatherhood and family life are under attack, devotion to St. Joseph is more urgent than ever.
Why Pray to St. Joseph?
1. Protector of Families
St. Joseph is the Guardian of the Holy Family. He understands the burdens of providing, protecting, and leading.
Pray to him for:
Marriage struggles
Wayward children
Financial concerns
Protection of your home
He is a powerful spiritual father.
2. Model for Men
Men especially should turn to St. Joseph.
He teaches:
Strength with gentleness
Responsibility without pride
Faithfulness in hidden duties
Sacrificial love
In a confused culture, St. Joseph provides clarity.
3. Patron of the Church
The Church officially recognizes St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. Just as he protected Christ’s physical body, he now protects Christ’s Mystical Body.
When you are troubled about the state of the Church, pray to St. Joseph.
4. Patron of a Happy Death
Tradition holds that St. Joseph died in the arms of Jesus and Mary. For this reason, he is invoked for the grace of a holy and peaceful death.
It is wise to begin praying now for the hour of your death.
A Simple Way to Honor St. Joseph This Month
During March, consider:
Praying the “To thee, O blessed Joseph” prayer daily
Attending Mass on March 19 if possible
Reading about his life
Consecrating your family to his protection
Asking his help in one specific need
Small acts of devotion bring great grace.
A Short Prayer
O glorious St. Joseph,
guardian of Jesus and chaste spouse of Mary,
protect our families, our parish, and our Church.
Teach us obedience, humility, and courage.
Obtain for us the grace to live faithfully
and to die in the friendship of God.
Amen.
In a noisy world, St. Joseph stands as a quiet strength.
In a time of instability, he stands as a steady protector.
In an age of confusion, he stands as a model of clarity and obedience.
Let us turn to him this month with confidence.
St. Joseph, pray for us.
