Offer an Extra Decade of the Rosary for the Poor Souls

The Holy Souls in Purgatory depend on our charity.

They can no longer merit for themselves. They cannot shorten their purification by their own efforts. But we can help them.

One simple and powerful way to assist them is by offering an extra decade of the Rosary for their relief.

Our Lady’s Request

It has long been encouraged in Catholic tradition to remember the Poor Souls when praying the Rosary. In approved private revelations and devotional practice, the faithful have been urged to offer prayers—especially the Rosary—for those undergoing purification.

Our Lady, who is Mother not only of the Church on earth but also of the suffering souls, desires that we practice mercy toward them.

Adding one extra decade for the Holy Souls is a small act of love with eternal consequences.

Why Pray for the Poor Souls?

Purgatory is not a second chance — it is the final purification for those who die in God’s friendship but are not yet perfectly purified.

These souls are saved. Heaven awaits them. But they suffer because they long for God.

Our prayers can:

  • Shorten their time of purification

  • Bring them comfort

  • Obtain for them a quicker entrance into Heaven

And when they reach Heaven, they do not forget those who helped them.

The saints tell us that the Holy Souls pray powerfully for their benefactors.

A Simple Practice

When praying your Rosary, simply add:

  • One extra decade

  • Offered specifically for the Poor Souls

  • Or for a particular deceased loved one

You may pray:

“O Lord, I offer this decade for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, especially those most forgotten and most in need of mercy.”

This small addition transforms your Rosary into an act of spiritual mercy.

A Work of Mercy That Costs Little

Praying for the dead is one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy.

It costs nothing.
It requires only intention.
Yet it brings immense grace.

Imagine arriving in Heaven and being greeted by souls who say:

“Thank you for praying for me.”

Make It a Habit

Consider:

  • Offering one extra decade daily during Lent

  • Praying for the Poor Souls every Friday

  • Enrolling deceased loved ones in a Novena Mass

  • Teaching children to pray for the departed

Small acts of charity echo in eternity.

Let us not forget those who cannot help themselves.

Add one decade.
Offer it with love.
Practice mercy.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.
