Our Lady of Częstochowa: A Mother Who Protects Her Children
For over six centuries, Catholics throughout the world have turned to Our Lady of Częstochowa, affectionately known as the Black Madonna, seeking her powerful intercession in times of war, disease, hardship, and uncertainty.
She is a reminder that we are never alone. Just as she lovingly cared for the Child Jesus, she continues to watch over all who place themselves under her maternal protection.
The Story of the Black Madonna
The miraculous icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa is housed at the Jasna Góra Monastery in Poland and has become one of the most beloved Marian shrines in the world.
According to ancient tradition, the image was painted by St. Luke the Evangelist on a wooden table believed to have belonged to the Holy Family. Over the centuries, the icon traveled through many lands before finally arriving in Poland in 1382.
One of the most recognizable features of the image is the two scars on Our Lady's right cheek. These marks came after the icon was attacked and desecrated by invaders. Although attempts were made to restore the painting, the scars remained—a lasting reminder that Mary shares in the sufferings of her children and remains faithful through every trial.
A Protectress in Times of Danger
Throughout history, Catholics have invoked Our Lady of Częstochowa during times of great danger.
She has been credited with protecting cities and nations during wars, defending the faithful from invading armies, and comforting countless people during epidemics, plagues, and times of widespread illness.
During the famous Siege of Jasna Góra in 1655, a small group of monks and soldiers defended the monastery against a much larger invading army. Their miraculous victory was attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of Częstochowa, and she has since been honored as the Queen and Protectress of Poland.
