St. Maximilian Kolbe: A Life of Courage, Love, and Sacrifice
In a world that often celebrates power and success, St. Maximilian Kolbe stands as a powerful witness to a different kind of greatness—the greatness of self-giving love.
His life reminds us that true courage is found not in taking, but in giving… even to the very end.
A Life Dedicated to God
St. Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan priest with a deep love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. From a young age, he felt called to serve God in a radical way.
He founded a movement called the Militia Immaculata, dedicated to bringing people closer to Christ through Mary. He used every means available at the time—printing presses, publications, and even radio—to spread the Gospel.
His life was marked by energy, creativity, and a burning desire to share God’s love.
A Witness in the Darkness
During World War II, Fr. Kolbe was arrested by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz, one of the most brutal concentration camps in history.
Even there, in the midst of suffering, he continued to live out his faith—comforting fellow prisoners, praying with them, and offering hope where there seemed to be none.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
In July 1941, after a prisoner escaped, the guards selected ten men to be put to death by starvation as punishment. One of the men cried out in despair for his wife and children.
At that moment, Fr. Kolbe stepped forward.
He offered to take the man’s place.
The guards accepted. Fr. Kolbe was sent to the starvation bunker, where he led the condemned men in prayer and song. After two weeks, he was the last still alive. He was then killed by lethal injection.
He gave his life so another could live.

Even in the face of death, he chose love.
2. Small Acts Prepare Us for Great Ones
His final sacrifice was the fruit of a life already given to God in small, daily ways.
3. We Are Called to Put Others First
