St. Paul: A Powerful Friend for the Conversion of Our Loved Ones
Many of us carry a quiet burden in our hearts: family members and friends who have left the Faith, or who have never truly known Our Lord. We worry about them, pray for them, and sometimes wonder if anything will ever change.
In this struggle, the Church gives us a powerful friend and intercessor: St. Paul the Apostle.
From Enemy of Christ to Apostle of Christ
Before his conversion, St. Paul was Saul of Tarsus, a fierce persecutor of the early Church. He was convinced he was doing God’s will by hunting Christians, dragging them off to prison, and approving their deaths.
Humanly speaking, Saul looked like the least likely person to become a saint.
And yet, on the road to Damascus, the Risen Christ appeared to him in blinding light and said:
“Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?”
In that moment, Christ touched his mind and heart so deeply that the persecutor became the great Apostle of the Gentiles. The man who tried to destroy the Church spent the rest of his life building it up, preaching, suffering, and finally dying for the Name of Jesus.
If the Lord can transform Saul into St. Paul, then **no one in our family is beyond the reach of God’s grace.
Why St. Paul Is a Special Patron for Conversions
St. Paul understands resistance to the Faith. He understands pride, being convinced that one is “right” while actually fighting against the truth. He understands what it means to undergo a radical change of heart and to let Christ overturn one’s whole life.
For that reason, he is a powerful intercessor for:
Those who oppose the Church
Those who are hostile to the Faith or mock it
Those who are indifferent, who live as if God does not exist
Those who once believed but have fallen away
When we ask St. Paul to pray for our loved ones, we are asking someone who personally knows the miracle of conversion to obtain that same grace for them.
How to Grow in Devotion to St. Paul
You don’t need complicated practices to have a real devotion to St. Paul. A few simple, faithful habits are enough:
1. Speak to Him Daily
Choose one or two names—perhaps the person you are most worried about—and entrust them to St. Paul every day.
You might pray something like:
St. Paul, Apostle of the Gentiles, please obtain the grace of conversion for [Name]. Open their mind to the truth and their heart to the love of Christ.”
Even a short, sincere prayer said every day is powerful in God’s eyes.
2. Read His Letters with Them in Mind
St. Paul’s letters are full of zeal, clarity, and love for souls. You might choose one letter (for example, Romans, Ephesians, Philippians, or 1 Corinthians) and read a small portion each day, praying for your loved ones as you do.
Ask St. Paul:
To teach you how to speak the truth with charity,
To strengthen your own faith,
And to give you wisdom in how and when to speak to those who are far from God.
The stronger your own faith and understanding become, the more God can use you as an instrument.
3. Honor His Feast Days
The Church celebrates St. Paul in a special way on:
January 25 – The Conversion of St. Paul
June 29– Saints Peter and Paul
On these days, you might:
Attend Mass, if possible
Offer a Rosary asking St. Paul’s intercession for your loved ones
Make a small sacrifice (fasting, giving something up, or doing a hidden act of charity) for their souls
In this way, you join your little efforts to St. Paul’s great zeal.
4. Offer Your Sufferings with St. Paul
St. Paul suffered enormously—shipwrecks, beatings, imprisonments, misunderstandings, and constant concern for the souls he was shepherding. He wrote that he was “filling up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ” in his own body, for the sake of the Church.
Your own pain over a loved one who is far from God can become part of that same offering.
When you feel that sorrow, you can pray:
“St. Paul, I unite this suffering to yours and to the Passion of Christ. Please use it for the conversion of [Name].”
Nothing is wasted when it is offered with love.
Loving Without Pushing
As we ask St. Paul to help convert our loved ones, he also teaches us how to love them well:
To be clear about the truth, but not harsh
To be patient, knowing that God’s timing is not ours
To remember that it is grace, not arguments, that truly converts a heart
Sometimes Our Lord allows us simply to pray, sacrifice, and give good example, while the hidden work of grace happens slowly over time. St. Paul reminds us never to give up hope, even when things seem impossible.
A Simple Daily Prayer to St. Paul
You might place a small image or statue of St. Paul in your home and pray this each day:
St. Paul, glorious Apostle of Jesus Christ, once you were far from the truth, but the Lord called you and changed your heart. I entrust to you today [Name(s)] and all those in my family who are far from God or from the Church. Obtain for them light to see, courage to return, and the grace of a true conversion of heart. St. Paul, pray for us and for all sinners. Amen.”
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Big Miracles
If God could turn a persecutor into a saint, He can rescue our children, spouses, siblings, and friends, no matter how far they seem to have gone.
Through the intercession of St. Paul, let us have the courage to ask for big conversions, to persevere in prayer, and to trust that God is at work even when we cannot see it.
St. Paul, Apostle of the Gentiles, pray for us and for our loved ones.”
