Understanding Our Sunday Collections & the Importance of Giving
Many parishioners have asked about the different collections taken up during Sunday Mass and why the Church encourages regular giving. We are deeply grateful for every prayer, sacrifice, and donation that helps support the life of our parish and the mission of the Church.
Why Does the Church Ask Us to Give?
Everything we have comes from God, and giving back to Him is an act of gratitude, trust, and worship. Scripture reminds us:
“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce.”
— Proverbs 3:9
And St. Paul teaches:
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
— 2 Corinthians 9:7
The word tithe traditionally means giving “one tenth.” While Catholics are not strictly required to give a certain percentage, the Church encourages us to support the Church according to our means and to make giving part of our regular spiritual life. Weekly or monthly giving helps sustain the mission of the parish and allows us to continue serving God faithfully.
First Collection — Supporting the Parish
The First Collection goes directly toward the regular needs and operating expenses of the parish, including:
Church utilities and maintenance
Liturgical supplies, candles, wine, and hosts
Father’s living expenses and travel
Insurance and parish bills
Upkeep of the church and grounds
Day-to-day parish ministry needs
This collection helps keep our parish running week after week and supports the sacramental life of the Church.
Second Collection — Special Missions & Ministries
The Second Collection is designated for special causes and ministries beyond regular parish expenses. Depending on the week, it may support:
Vocations and seminary formation
Priest training
Foreign missions
Catholic education and schools
Priory support
These collections help strengthen the Church both locally and throughout the world.
Building Restoration Pledges
Our Building Restoration Pledges are a separate collection dedicated specifically to the restoration and future of our parish church.
Those who have pledged monthly support for the restoration may place their donations in the black or blue boxes located by the front door of the church. These pledge offerings are collected on the first Sunday of each month.
Every pledge directly helps restore, preserve, and beautify our parish for future generations. We are deeply grateful for the sacrifices and generosity of all who are helping rebuild and strengthen our parish home.
