St. Philomena Virgin & Martyr — Powerful Intercessor in Difficult and Desperate Causes

Meet St. Philomena, a young virgin and martyr whose intercession has inspired extraordinary devotion among Catholics, including many saints.

Her Story

In 1802, a tomb was discovered in the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome bearing tiles with the words “Peace be with you, Philomena.” The remains found there were transferred to Mugnano del Cardinale, Italy, where devotion to St. Philomena quickly spread.

A traditional account of her life, associated with private revelations received in the nineteenth century, describes Philomena as a young Christian princess who consecrated her virginity to Jesus Christ. According to this tradition, when she refused the advances of the Emperor Diocletian because of her vow to Christ, she suffered terrible torments and ultimately gave her life rather than deny her faith.

While the details of this account are devotional tradition rather than a historically established biography, devotion to St. Philomena became extraordinarily widespread.

Among her most famous devotees was St. John Vianney, the Curé of Ars, who had tremendous confidence in her intercession and encouraged others to seek her prayers.

St. Peter Julian Eymard, St. Peter Chanel, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, and other holy men and women also had devotion to her.

Testimonies of Her Intercession

One of the most famous stories connected with St. Philomena is that of Venerable Pauline Jaricot, foundress of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Pauline became gravely ill, and her condition was considered extremely serious. In 1835, she traveled to Mugnano to pray before the relics of St. Philomena.

While there, Pauline experienced a remarkable recovery.

Her healing helped spread devotion to St. Philomena throughout Europe and attracted the attention of Pope Gregory XVI.

St. John Vianney & St. Philomena

The Curé of Ars had such confidence in St. Philomena that devotion to her became closely associated with his ministry.

People came to Ars seeking cures, conversions, and other extraordinary favors. St. John Vianney frequently directed attention away from himself and toward the intercession of his beloved “dear little saint,” St. Philomena.

For generations since, Catholics have continued to report favors after seeking her intercession—particularly in difficult family circumstances, illnesses, conversions, pregnancies, and situations that appeared hopeless.

These personal testimonies should always be understood properly: every grace and miracle comes from God. The saints intercede for us before Him.

The Three Knocks — A Little Sign from St. Philomena?

Among some devotees of St. Philomena, there are beautiful testimonies involving three unexpected knocks.

People have shared stories of praying earnestly to St. Philomena—sometimes during a novena or while asking for help with a particularly difficult intention—and afterward hearing three distinct knocks without an obvious explanation.

Some devotees have received these three knocks as a little consolation or reminder that their prayers have been heard and that St. Philomena is interceding for them.

If you are praying to St. Philomena, you may even hear someone say:

“Listen for the three knocks.”

But remember that this is a devotional tradition and personal testimony, not a promise of the Church or a guaranteed sign from St. Philomena.

We should never demand signs from Heaven or become discouraged if we do not receive one.

You may hear three knocks.

You may receive your answer in another unexpected way.

You may receive no outward sign at all.

And sometimes God may simply ask you to keep praying and keep trusting.

The important thing is not the sign—it is the faith behind the prayer.

If three unexplained knocks do happen while you are praying to St. Philomena, you can simply smile, thank God for the encouragement, and continue praying.

And whether you receive a sign or not, remember:

God has heard your prayer.

A Prayer to St. Philomena

O faithful Virgin and glorious Martyr, St. Philomena,
who works so many miracles on behalf of the poor and sorrowing,
have pity on me.

Thou knowest the multitude and diversity of my needs.
Behold me at thy feet, full of misery, but full of hope.

I entreat thy charity, O great Saint!
Graciously hear me and obtain from God
a favorable answer to the request
which I now humbly lay before thee.

[Mention your intention.]

I am firmly convinced that through thy merits,
through the scorn, sufferings, and death thou didst endure,
united to the merits of the Passion and Death of Jesus thy Spouse,
I shall obtain what I ask of thee.

And in the joy of my heart,
I will bless God,
Who is admirable in His Saints.
