The Power of the Jesus Prayer: One Simple Prayer You Can Pray All Day

Sometimes we make prayer more complicated than it needs to be.

We think we need the perfect words, a quiet church, a long period of time, or the right spiritual feeling before we can really pray.

But Christians have prayed one remarkably simple prayer for centuries:

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

This is commonly known as the Jesus Prayer.

It is short enough to pray while driving, working, walking, waiting in line, lying awake at night, or sitting quietly before the Blessed Sacrament.

And at the very center of it is the most important name we could ever speak:

Jesus.

There Is Power in the Name of Jesus

Sacred Scripture tells us:

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” — Philippians 2:10

The Jesus Prayer isn't powerful because the words are a magical formula.

It is powerful because we are calling upon Jesus Christ with faith, humility, repentance, and trust.

We acknowledge who He is:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God.

Then we acknowledge who we are:

Have mercy on me, a sinner.

In one little prayer, there is faith, humility, repentance, surrender, and confidence in God's mercy.

Pray It When Your Mind Won't Stop

Sometimes our thoughts become louder than our prayers.

We replay conversations.

We worry about tomorrow.

We imagine everything that could go wrong.

We try to solve situations that are completely outside our control.

Instead of continuing the conversation inside your head, slowly begin:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Again.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

You aren't trying to force yourself to feel peaceful.

You are simply turning your attention back toward Jesus.

Pray It When You Are Tempted

When temptation comes, we often make the mistake of arguing with it.

Instead, turn immediately toward Christ.

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Ask Jesus for help before the temptation grows stronger.

The prayer reminds us that holiness doesn't come from our own strength.

We need grace.

Pray It When You Are Angry

Someone says something hurtful.

You receive an upsetting message.

A coworker frustrates you.

A family member tests your patience.

Before responding, pray the Jesus Prayer once.

Or five times.

Or twenty times if necessary.

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Notice that the prayer doesn't say:

“Jesus, show this person how wrong they are.”

It begins with our own need for mercy.

That alone can change the way we respond.

Pray It for Someone Else

The traditional form is a prayer of personal repentance, but it can also inspire us to turn toward Jesus when someone else needs prayer.

If you hear an ambulance, pray:

“Jesus, have mercy.”

If someone is suffering:

“Jesus, have mercy.”

If you hear terrible news:

“Jesus, have mercy.”

If someone has fallen away from the Faith:

“Jesus, have mercy.”

If you don't know what someone needs:

“Jesus, have mercy.”

God knows everything contained within those few words.

Let It Become the Prayer of Your Heart

The Christian spiritual tradition speaks beautifully about learning to pray continually.

St. Paul tells us:

“Pray without ceasing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

How could anyone possibly pray all day?

The Jesus Prayer gives us one practical answer.

Pray it while walking down a hallway.

Pray it before answering the phone.

Pray it while washing dishes.

Pray it before an important conversation.

Pray it when you wake during the night.

Pray it before beginning work.

Pray it when you're frightened.

Little by little, we begin bringing Jesus into the ordinary moments of life.

Try It With Your Breathing

Some Christians traditionally use their breathing as a simple way to slow down and pray attentively.

As you breathe in:

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God…”

As you breathe out:

“…have mercy on me, a sinner.”

There is nothing magical about the breathing technique. It simply helps quiet our distractions and focus our attention on Christ.

Even five minutes can become a beautiful period of prayer.

You Can Pray the Shortest Version Too

There will be moments when you don't even have the strength for the entire prayer.

Then simply say:

“Jesus, mercy.”

Or:

“Jesus, I trust in You.”

Sometimes one sincere invocation of the Holy Name can contain everything our heart is trying to say.

Try the Jesus Prayer This Week

Choose a time when you normally become distracted or worried.

Your commute.

Your lunch break.

Before bed.

While walking.

Instead of immediately reaching for your phone, spend five minutes repeating slowly:

Lord Jesus Christ,
Son of God,
have mercy on me,
a sinner.

Don't worry about having a particular spiritual experience.

Simply turn toward Jesus.

And when your mind wanders, return to His name.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Sometimes All We Need Is His Name

There will be moments when we don't know what to pray.

We don't understand what God is doing.

We don't know how a situation will end.

We don't know how to help someone we love.

We may not even know what to ask for anymore.

But we still know one Name.

Jesus.

Speak His name with faith.

Speak it when you're joyful.

Speak it when you're afraid.

Speak it when you've sinned.

Speak it when you're suffering.

Speak it when you need strength.

And let the Jesus Prayer become a little pathway that continually brings your heart back to Him:

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Most Holy Name of Jesus, be our refuge.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Jesus, I trust in You.
