The Green Scapular: A Simple Devotion for Conversion, Healing, and Trust
Sometimes the simplest prayers are the ones we can return to again and again.
The Green Scapular, formally known as the Badge of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is a beautiful Marian sacramental especially associated with prayers for conversion and spiritual healing.
It can be particularly meaningful when there is someone we love who has fallen away from the Faith, needs conversion, is struggling spiritually, or simply needs to be brought closer to Jesus.
Where Did the Green Scapular Come From?
The devotion traces back to Sister Justine Bisqueyburu, a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, who reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary beginning in 1840 in Paris.
In the image associated with the devotion, Our Lady appears with her Immaculate Heart, and the Green Scapular bears an image of Mary on one side and her heart on the other.
Unlike the more familiar Brown Scapular, the Green Scapular is not connected with enrollment in a confraternity. It is more accurately a medal-like cloth sacramental or badge intended to encourage confidence in Mary's intercession and lead souls toward her Son.
The Prayer of the Green Scapular
The traditional invocation printed on the scapular is wonderfully simple:
“Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.”
That's it.
It is a prayer that can be repeated throughout the day.
When you're worried about someone:
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.
When someone you love has stopped practicing the Faith:
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.
When you don't know what else to say:
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.
Can You Give a Green Scapular to Someone Else?
Yes. The Green Scapular has long been associated particularly with praying for another person's conversion.
If the person is willing, they may carry or wear it themselves. Traditionally, when someone would not carry it, the scapular could be kept among their belongings while another person faithfully prayed the invocation for them.
But there is an important distinction:
The scapular itself is not magic.
We don't hide a Green Scapular somewhere believing the object will force another person to convert.
Conversion is the work of God's grace, and every person retains free will.
The sacramental reminds us to pray faithfully and entrust that soul to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Pray Without Giving Up
Perhaps you have been praying for someone's conversion for years.
Nothing seems to be changing.
Keep praying.
St. Monica prayed persistently for her son Augustine. St. Thérèse prayed fervently for the conversion of the condemned prisoner Henri Pranzini. Throughout the history of the Church, Catholics have prayed for souls whose situations appeared hopeless.
Never decide that someone is beyond God's mercy.
You may not be able to argue someone back into the Church.
You may not be able to change their heart.
But you can pray:
“Blessed Mother, I cannot reach this person's heart. You know what they need. Bring them to your Son.”
And then leave room for God to work.
Pray for Your Own Conversion Too
It is easy to look at someone else and think:
“They need conversion.”
But every one of us needs continual conversion.
Keep a Green Scapular as a reminder to ask Our Lady:
Help me become holy.
Help me overcome my sins.
Help me make a good Confession.
Help me love Jesus more.
Help me die in friendship with God.
The goal of every genuine Marian devotion is ultimately the same:
To bring us closer to Jesus Christ.
Have It Blessed
Because the Green Scapular is a sacramental, it is appropriate to have it blessed by a priest.
Then use it with faith—not superstition.
Keep it somewhere that reminds you to pray. Carry it with you. Give one to someone who would appreciate it. Most importantly, say the prayer.
The little piece of green cloth should lead to something much greater:
Prayer.
Conversion.
Confidence in God's mercy.
Love for Our Lady.
And ultimately, greater love for Jesus.
A Simple Daily Practice
Choose someone who particularly needs prayer.
Each morning, bring that person to Our Lady:
“Blessed Mother, today I entrust _____ to your Immaculate Heart. Obtain for them every grace necessary for their salvation and bring them closer to your Divine Son.”
Then pray:
“Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”
Repeat it throughout the day whenever that person comes to mind.
Don't obsess over whether anything is happening.
Don't demand a sign.
Don't try to control how God answers.
Pray. Persevere. Trust.
Perhaps the Green Scapular can become a little reminder in our homes:
Never give up praying for a soul.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
