What If Your Family Is Being Held Together by Someone’s Prayers?

Every family has someone who prays.

Sometimes it is a grandmother quietly saying her Rosary every morning.

Sometimes it is a mother praying after everyone has gone to bed.

Sometimes it is a husband asking God to protect his family before leaving for work.

Sometimes it is a child offering a simple Hail Mary.

And sometimes no one else even knows it is happening.

We often underestimate these hidden prayers.

But what if some of the greatest graces your family has received came because someone kept praying when everyone else stopped?

Every Family Needs an Intercessor

Throughout Scripture, we see people standing before God and praying for others.

Abraham interceded for others. Moses pleaded for his people. Our Lady interceded at Cana. St. Paul constantly prayed for the Christians entrusted to his care.

God wants us to pray for one another.

Perhaps in your family, you are being called to be that person.

Not the person who fixes everyone.

Not the person who lectures everyone.

Not the person who worries about everyone.

The person who prays for everyone.

There is a difference.

Pray More Than You Complain

It is easy to notice everything another person needs to change.

“My husband needs to…”

“My children should…”

“My parents never…”

“My family doesn't…”

But here is a question worth asking:

Do I pray for them as much as I complain about them?

Imagine what might happen if every time we were tempted to complain about someone, we offered a Hail Mary for that person instead.

Instead of:

“Why won't they change?”

Pray:

“Blessed Mother, help them.”

Instead of:

“They never listen.”

Pray:

“Holy Ghost, guide them.”

Instead of spending twenty minutes worrying about someone's future, spend twenty minutes praying the Rosary for them.

Prayer changes the way we love people.

Pray Especially for the One Who Isn't Praying

Maybe someone in your family has stopped attending Mass.

Maybe they haven't been to Confession in years.

Maybe they don't believe anymore.

Maybe they don't want to hear anything about religion.

Don't give up on them.

And don't make every conversation an argument about the Faith.

Pray.

Put their name into your Rosary.

Have Masses offered for them.

Offer a sacrifice for them.

Ask St. Monica to intercede.

Ask Our Lady to bring them back to her Son.

You may not be able to reach their heart.

God can.

Your Children Need Your Prayers Before They Need Them

Don't wait until there is a crisis to begin praying for your children.

Pray for the children you have now.

Pray for your grandchildren.

Pray for your godchildren.

Parents can even pray for the future spouses of their children long before those people enter their lives.

Ask God to protect them.

Ask Him to preserve their Faith.

Ask for good friendships.

Ask for purity.

Ask for wisdom.

Ask that they discover their vocation.

Ask that they receive the Sacraments faithfully.

Most importantly, ask that they become saints and reach Heaven.

That is the greatest thing we can ever desire for someone we love.

Husbands and Wives: Pray for Each Other

One of the most beautiful things a married person can do is quietly pray for his or her spouse.

Pray for your husband's work.

Pray for your wife's burdens.

Pray for protection against temptation.

Pray for patience with one another.

Pray for your marriage when it is wonderful.

And especially pray for it when it isn't.

There will be moments when you cannot solve something for the person you love.

In those moments, place that person into God's hands:

“Jesus, I love this person, but You love them infinitely more. Take care of what I cannot.”

Maybe Nobody Will Ever Know

Some of your greatest acts of love may never be noticed.

Nobody sees the Rosary you prayed in the car.

Nobody knows you offered your Holy Communion for them.

Nobody knows you whispered their name during Adoration.

Nobody knows you offered your headache, difficult day, or small sacrifice for their intention.

That's okay.

God knows.

Hidden prayer is still powerful prayer.

Become the Person Who Prays

Every family needs someone who refuses to give up.

Someone who continues praying when circumstances look hopeless.

Someone who believes conversion is possible.

Someone who remembers the deceased.

Someone who prays for the babies yet to be born.

Someone who prays for marriages before they are struggling.

Someone who asks God to protect the next generation.

Why couldn't that person be you?

You don't need an elaborate spiritual routine.

Start with one Rosary.

Write the names of your family members on a piece of paper.

Place it inside your Bible or prayer book.

And every day, say:

“Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I place my family into Your hands. Protect them, convert us, sanctify us, and bring every one of us safely to Heaven.”

Then pray your Rosary.

Tomorrow, do it again.

And the next day, again.

A Family Can Be Changed by One Faithful Soul

You may never see everything your prayers accomplish.

You may pray for someone for years before anything appears to change.

Don't measure God's work only by what you can see.

Keep praying.

Keep offering Masses.

Keep going to Confession.

Keep receiving Our Lord worthily.

Keep saying your Rosary.

Keep quietly placing your family beneath Our Lady's mantle.

Perhaps generations from now, someone in your family will still be practicing the Catholic Faith because one person decided that the family was worth praying for.

Be that person.

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, protect our families.
St. Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family, pray for us.
St. Monica, pray for those who have fallen away.
St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, make our families holy and lead us together to Heaven. Amen.
