Why and How to Pray the Chaplet of St. Joseph
Devotion to St. Joseph has grown steadily in the life of the Church, especially in times of uncertainty and trial. As the Protector of the Holy Family and Patron of the Universal Church, St. Joseph is a powerful intercessor for families, fathers, workers, and those seeking perseverance in grace.
One beautiful way to honor him is through the Chaplet of St. Joseph.
Why Pray the Chaplet of St. Joseph?
The Chaplet is a focused meditation on the life, virtues, and mission of St. Joseph. It helps us grow in:
Trust in God’s Providence
Purity of heart
Obedience to God’s will
Courage in responsibility
Perseverance in family life
St. Joseph was entrusted with the greatest treasures on earth — Jesus and Mary. If God trusted him with His Son, we can trust him with our needs.
The Chaplet is especially powerful when prayed for:
Protection of families
Fathers and future husbands
Purity and vocation discernment
Employment or financial concerns
A happy and holy death
The Eight Promises of St. Joseph
Tradition holds that St. Joseph grants particular spiritual favors to those who cultivate a true devotion to him and faithfully pray in his honor. The following promises are associated with devotion to St. Joseph and the praying of his Chaplet:
God will grant special graces to those that do not know me, to have a great devotion to me.
God will bless all who are married and the blessing in their family will be without limit.
Those married and without children will be blessed with offspring.
God will give special graces to be delivered from temptations and the attacks of the devil.
They shall have a good and happy death.
They shall overcome their trials and tribulations.
God shall grant them immediate help when they invoke my intercession, for the demons have extreme dread of the invocation of my name.
For all those who embrace a St. Joseph cenacle, they shall obtain a more fervent love for Jesus and a true devotion to Most Holy Mary.
What Is the Chaplet of St. Joseph?
The Chaplet typically consists of 15 mysteries, recalling important moments in the life of St. Joseph, divided into three groups:
His Sorrows
His Joys
His Virtues and Privileges
It is traditionally prayed on beads consisting of 15 groups of 4 beads, though it may also be prayed on a regular Rosary if needed.
How to Pray the Chaplet of St. Joseph
While variations exist, a common method is as follows:
1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross
2. Opening Prayer
Offer your intention and ask St. Joseph’s intercession.
Example:
O glorious St. Joseph, faithful guardian of Jesus and Mary, I entrust to you my family and my intentions. Obtain for me the grace to imitate your virtues and to trust in God’s providence.
3. On Each Group of Four Beads
Announce one mystery (a sorrow or joy of St. Joseph).
Pray one Our Father.
Pray three Hail Marys.
Conclude with a Glory Be.
Continue through all 15 mysteries.
The Sorrows and Joys of St. Joseph (Examples)
Some of the traditional reflections include:
The Doubt of St. Joseph and the Joy of the Angel’s Message
The Poverty of Bethlehem and the Joy of the Savior’s Birth
The Circumcision of Christ and the Joy of His Holy Name
The Flight into Egypt and the Joy of Safety
The Loss of the Child Jesus and the Joy of Finding Him in the Temple
Meditating on these mysteries helps us see how suffering and joy are often intertwined — just as they were in St. Joseph’s life.
A Devotion for Our Times
St. Joseph lived quietly. He worked faithfully. He obeyed promptly. He protected fiercely.
In an age of confusion about fatherhood, marriage, and authority, his example is urgently needed.
The Chaplet helps us grow in his spirit of:
Silence
Strength
Fidelity
Courage
A Simple Beginning
If the full Chaplet feels long, begin simply:
Pray one sorrow and joy daily
Or pray the full Chaplet once a week during March
Or offer it on Wednesdays, traditionally dedicated to St. Joseph
Consistency matters more than length.
