Why Pray the Chaplet of Our Lady of Tears?

In times of suffering, confusion, and spiritual battle, the Church invites us to turn to the Blessed Virgin Mary — especially under titles that remind us of her compassion.

One such devotion is the Chaplet of Our Lady of Tears.

This chaplet calls upon the sorrowful tears of the Mother of God, asking that they obtain mercy, conversion, and protection for souls.

The Meaning of Our Lady’s Tears

Mary’s tears are not weakness.

They are the tears of a mother who sees:

  • Sin destroying souls

  • Families wounded

  • Faith growing cold

  • Her Son offended

When we meditate on her tears, we remember that sin has consequences — not only for us, but for those who love us.

Her tears are filled with compassion and intercession.

Why Pray This Chaplet?

1. For Conversion of Sinners

The Chaplet of Our Lady of Tears is especially powerful when prayed for:

  • Fallen-away family members

  • Those living in serious sin

  • Hardened hearts

  • Those far from the Church

We ask that the tears Mary shed at the foot of the Cross obtain grace for those who resist it.

2. For Protection Against Evil

Tradition holds that this chaplet is particularly effective in spiritual warfare.

In the prayer, we say:

“By the tears You shed, O Mother of God, destroy the reign of Satan.”

The enemy fears humility and purity. He especially fears the intercession of the Blessed Virgin.

3. For Healing in Families

Many families today suffer deep wounds — resentment, addiction, loss of faith, broken relationships.

The Chaplet invites us to bring these wounds to a Mother who understands suffering.

Mary stood beneath the Cross. She knows grief.

How the Chaplet Is Prayed

The chaplet is typically prayed on special beads.

On the large beads, one prays:

“O Jesus, look upon the tears of Her who loved You most on earth and loves You most ardently in heaven.”

On the small beads:

“O Jesus, hear our prayers for the sake of the tears of Your Most Holy Mother.”

It concludes with an invocation asking Our Lady to intercede for us.

Even if you do not have the special beads, the chaplet may be prayed on a Rosary.

A Devotion for Our Times

We live in a time when sin is often celebrated and repentance discouraged.

The Chaplet of Our Lady of Tears reminds us:

  • Sin wounds

  • Grace heals

  • Prayer saves

When we unite our petitions to Mary’s tears, we participate in her maternal mission of bringing souls back to her Son.

A Work of Love

Praying this chaplet is not about fear. It is about love.

We pray because:

  • We want souls saved

  • We want evil restrained

  • We want families restored

  • We want hearts converted

Mary’s tears are powerful because they flow from perfect charity.

If you are burdened for someone far from God, this chaplet is a beautiful and powerful way to intercede.

Let us entrust our families, our parish, and our world to the sorrowful tears of Our Lady.

Our Lady of Tears, pray for us.
