Why Pray to St. Rita? The Saint of the Impossible

There are moments in life when a situation seems beyond repair.

A broken marriage.
A hardened heart.
A long-standing family wound.
A prayer unanswered for years.

In these moments, the Church points us to St. Rita of Cascia — known for centuries as the Saint of the Impossible.

Who Was St. Rita?

St. Rita lived in 15th-century Italy. Her life was marked not by ease, but by suffering.

  • She desired religious life but was married instead.

  • Her husband was violent and difficult.

  • She prayed for his conversion — and he changed before his death.

  • Her two sons later fell into bitterness and anger. She prayed fervently for their souls.

  • After being widowed, she eventually entered religious life and embraced deep penance and prayer.

Her entire life was a testimony to perseverance, forgiveness, and trust in God.

Why Is She Called the Saint of the Impossible?

Because again and again, God worked through her in situations that seemed hopeless.

She is especially invoked for:

  • Impossible family situations

  • Marital struggles

  • Conversion of loved ones

  • Difficult relationships

  • Long-standing prayers that seem unanswered

Where human strength fails, grace can still act.

Why Pray to St. Rita?

1. She Understands Family Pain

St. Rita endured the heartbreak of domestic conflict, loss, and fear for her children’s souls.

If you carry family sorrow, she understands.

2. She Is a Model of Forgiveness

One of her greatest virtues was forgiveness. She prayed for her husband’s conversion and did not allow bitterness to take root in her heart.

If you struggle with resentment or deep hurt, ask St. Rita for her grace.

3. She Teaches Perseverance

Some prayers take years to bear fruit. St. Rita teaches us not to measure God’s work by our timetable.

Her life reminds us:

God is never late.

A Simple Prayer to St. Rita

O glorious St. Rita,
patient and faithful servant of God,
you who endured suffering with trust and courage,
intercede for us in our trials.

Obtain for us perseverance in prayer,
peace in our families,
and confidence in God’s mercy.

Through your powerful intercession,
may what seems impossible be made possible
according to God’s holy will.
Amen.

Trust in God’s Providence

When we pray to St. Rita, we are not asking for magic. We are asking for grace — the grace to endure, to forgive, to trust, and to persevere.

Some impossibilities are changed.
Some are transformed.
All are sanctified when placed in God’s hands.

If you are carrying something that feels impossible, bring it to St. Rita.

She has walked that road before.

St. Rita of Cascia, pray for us.
